The Worthington Global Group is focused on manufacturing, design and engineering and the erecting of light gauge steel framed residential buildings in emerging international markets. Utilizing the core competencies of the Worthington Industries businesses, the Group is working to grow the Company's presence in emerging markets around the world, particularly where governments seek to develop housing for their growing middle class populations.
As part of the strategy, the Worthington Modern Steel Framing System Co., Ltd. was recently formed in China as a joint venture between Worthington and Hubei Modern Urban Construction & Development Group Co. The joint venture will operate out of a facility being constructed in the Hubei province of China in the city of Xiantao, near Wuhan. The Company will manufacture light gauge steel studs and design, engineer and erect light gauge steel-framed residential mid-rise buildings as well as supply curtain wall and interior framing solutions for commercial buildings. The commercial territory includes the provinces of Hubei, Hunan, Henan, Jiangxi and Anhui in Central China which have a combined population of approximately 300 million.
Worthington Global Group is also working on a large scale project in Mozambique, Africa, underway since September 2010. Using Worthington's W-IBS steel framing system, up to 26 residential buildings are being built with steel framing for use on the campus of the All-African games set for September 2011. The W-IBS system allows for a project of this size to be completed in a much shorter time frame than traditional building methods. Nearly 4,000 tons of steel are required for the construction. The majority of studs and joint product are being exported from Worthington's U.S. operations.
